The Avian Influenza Epidemiology and Its Coping Strategies
Lim Hyun-Sul

Abstract
Human beings have suffered from three influenza pandemics in 20th century. Especially, the 1918 influenza epidemic was one of history¡¯s great disasters to human beings. It was prevalent throughout the world and spreaded rapidly and killed many people about 40 million. Now, H5 and N1 subtypes, highly pathogenic avian influenza is raging throughout the world and infects human across the species barrier. If avian influenza would occur new antigenic shift, therefore efficient human to human transmission acquire, there would be another disaster. I discussed on influenza pandemics, the epidemiology of avian influenza, the relationship between avian influenza and influenza pandemics, economic losses due to avian influenza, avian influenza viruses in bioinformatics researches, and the preparedness plan for next influenza pandemic. Avian influenza as H5 and N1 subtypes is prevalent in Southeast Asia, China and throughout the world. To manage the next influenza pandemic, we have to strengthen the surveillance system, coordinate global scientific researches and developments. Every country must have antiviral stockpiles, and develop new vaccines for rapid response and containment. Furthermore, human beings have to closely observe avian influenza occurrence throughout the world.
